Yay! Happy new years and 2018 everyone!
I’m so excited to welcome a new year and a fresh start this January. As cliche as it may sound the new year has always been my time to reinvent myself and make a list of things I’ve been meaning to do but never got around to in the year prior. The resolutions are written, the goals are set and the checkmarks are slowly being ticked.
I’m so looking forward to getting back into a routine after weeks of traveling and holiday madness! The brink of a new year has me buzzing and inspired, to say the least, beginning with this lengthy blog post about all my favourite beauty products! With fresh starts in mind, I thought instead of doing a January edit this month I’d try something new and round up my favourite beauty products from the last 365 days. I’m a beauty junkie so despite sharing 17 products, I still struggled to narrow it down! I split this post up into three different sections – skincare, beauty, and hair.
Hopefully, a few of these products inspire you going into the new year and can help with your fresh start as well! Enjoy! xo
Ole Henriksen Truth Serum
In 2017 I definitely pushed myself to get more into skin care! I’ve always been super into makeup but one thing I’ve lacked and am hoping to improve even further is taking care of my skin underneath all the products! If your skin is clear, then makeup application is a breeze. I’ve never tried a serum before but I heard raving reviews about the Ole Henriksen Truth Serum that convinced me to give it a try. This product is AMAZING – it leaves my skin smooth, bright and creates the perfect canvas for makeup. It’s charged with collagen and Vitamin C which are both key ingredients when it comes to skincare. I use this daily – once in the morning and once at night and the results have been seriously worth the price tag.
Glossier Moisturizing Moon Mask
Glossier is another huge brand that I got into this year! Their products are high end but still surprisingly affordable, especially during Black Friday and Boxing day sales! Of all the Glossier products I tried this year, the moisturizing moon mask has to be my favourite! I leave this product on for longer than recommended 15 minutes and when I wash it off my skin is hydrated, supple and smooth. I notice such a huge difference in the texture of my skin that I’m seriously addicted and find myself using this multiple times a week. Shop here.
Mario Badescu Rosewater Facial Spray
This was literally the product I looked forward to using every day in 2017! I set this beside my bed on my nightstand and use it right when I wake up and before I go to bed. The rosewater is super refreshing, cooling and has a lovely smell. It adds moisture to the skin, preps for makeup and acts as a primer. Total must-have!
Real Techniques Sponge
Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the original beauty blender to apply makeup, but I definitely don’t love the price tag! I found myself needing to replace it too often to justify forking out the money, especially when dupes like the Real Techniques sponge exist! I love this sponge – it applies product just as well as the beauty blender and has a flat surface that is great for applying foundation and a rounded tip for getting under the eyes and around the nose with concealer. If you find yourself dreading the moment you have to repurchase a new beauty blender, try this sponge instead! I buy mine in packs of two at Wal Mart and the price is totally affordable, especially for the quality!
It Cosmetics CC+ Cream
I find that full coverage foundation can be quite heavy, especially during the summer months or during long days. Luckily this year I discovered the It Cosmetics CC+ Cream and it has been my go-to everyday product for light-medium coverage! It keeps my combination skin looking glowy without looking oily which I think is absolutely key for an everyday look. Super lightweight, buildable and hydrating on the skin!
Born This Way Foundation
And for days when I’m having a breakout and need a little extra coverage or even for a more formal event, I LOVE the Too Faced Born This Way foundation! This medium to full coverage product makes my skin look absolutely flawless but still totally natural. I have literally gotten asked whether I’m wearing makeup or not when I have a full face of foundation on with this product! If you haven’t tried this foundation yet, you’re missing out!
Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Bronzer
My go-to bronzer has always been the Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Bronzer! This matte bronzer has been my favourite for years and is the perfect tone to double as a contour. Since I have an olive complexion I always find it difficult to work with bronzers that are too orange, but this product definitely has more of a true brown undertone that never leaves my face looking muddy or dirty.
Tarte Exposed Blush
Another one of my all-time favourites! This blush is perfect for an everyday, light wash of color and adds a sun-kissed, rosy look to my face without making it obvious that I’m wearing blush. Subtle is definitely my motto when it comes to blush so this understated mauve colour is perfect!
Becca Opal Pressed Powder Highlight
The Becca Opal pressed powder highlight is still my holy grail favourite! This highlighter is super buildable which makes it versatile for a light everyday look or perfect for a night out when layered up! The finish is a golden, champagne tone without being too pink or too cool and is, in my opinion, the absolute perfect highlight formula!
Nyx Micro Brow Pencil
I’ve used the Anastasia Beverly Hills Pomade for quite some time now but after dying my hair lighter over the summer, I found that it was a bit too dark for my liking! In an attempt for a quick fix I ran out and purchased the Nyx Micro Brow pencil after recalling positive reviews and purchased a bit of a lighter shade in “ash brown.” This pencil has totally changed how I do my brows! Rather than the heavy, perfectly sculpted brow look I used to go for, this pencil helps give me more of a feathered, natural look. The pencil is also double sided with a spooly brush on one end which is super convenient for traveling and retouching throughout the day.
Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara
I love trying new mascaras, but the Lash Sensational by Maybelline has got to be my all-time favourite! I love the look of bold, voluminous lashes but prefer a feathered out effect rather than chunky or spidery looking lashes. This wand and formula do exactly that while providing all the lash essentials – length, volume and separation!
Mac Soar Lip Liner
I use a lipliner every day and found my most used for the year was Soar by Mac! This color is the perfect neutral mauvey/nude/pink and adds a bit of color and brightness to my face without being an obvious color of any sort. I love the idea of having a go-to “my lips but better” lip liner and this is definitely that shade for my complexion and undertones!
Smith’s Rosebud Lip Salve
As for lip balm, the Smith’s rosebud lip salve was my absolute fave this year! The scent is lovely and my lips automatically feel supple, hydrated and soft after applying this! It lasts for hours and has a slight pink tint that brightens the face but doesn’t require a mirror for perfect application. A definite must-have lip balm and something I always have on hand when I’m out and about!
Klorane Dry Shampoo
I’ve loved the Batiste dry shampoo for years and never thought any dry shampoos I could try would compare! Near the end of 2017, I was pleasantly proved wrong with the Klorane Dry Shampoo with oat milk! This product instantly refreshes my hair, adds volume and leaves my hair feeling fresh and with even less residue and white cast than the Batiste dry shampoo. The formula is gentle and has a light scent that isn’t overpowering or noticeable. If you love the results of the Batiste dry shampoo, you’ll love this Klorane formula even more! Shop the product here.
Garnier Texture Tease Finish Spray
Texture spray became a necessity for me this year! I love the look of undone beach waves and this tends to be my go-to hairstyle on a regular basis. Rather than using hairspray which sometimes leaves my hair crunchy, I decided to opt for a dry texture spray this year! It’s the perfect combination of a dry shampoo and hairspray and adds volume and piecy beach texture without the feel of heavy products
Clairol Shimmer Lights Purple Shampoo
Having balayage or blonde hair definitely comes with its challenges, especially when it comes to keeping away brass and maintaining the ashy look of freshly dyed locks. Luckily, this Clairol shimmer lights purple shampoo does just the trick! I use this every other time I wash my hair and find that my blonde always looks brighter, lighter and way less bronze-looking when I use this product. I also find that I don’t need to dye my hair as often while using this shampoo because my blonde stays bright longer! Definitely, one of the best purple shampoos I’ve tried and a must-try for balayage and blondes!
